Royal Mail - National Distribution Centre

Location: Crick, Northamptonshire
Number of employees: approx 1000
Nature of work: Mail Logistics

The employees here live in various locations across the region and are often travelling long distances to work. Having completed the Learning Well course, we help employees to explore sport/fitness activities near to their homes (supplying information on leisure centres, sports clubs, parks and gyms/health clubs).

We also focus on workplace activities/awareness. A very well established learning centre was already in place so we initially engaged those learners already attending IT classes through initiatives such as the BBC’s Big Challenge. Royal Mail NDC was entered for the Big Challenge’s Most Improved Employer award. Three employees took on the role as ‘Active Learning Reps’ to help promote Learning Well on the “shop floor”. Health lifestyle posters have been put up (e.g. take stairs instead of lift, try healthy snacks, get active with the family & stretching charts) and a “Climb Everest” pedometer challenge set up. Every Thursday over the lunch break an information table has been present in the canteen. We provide a mini fitness test (blood pressure, weight and body mass index, body fat %) for those who sign up to Learning Well. Based on these results, we set them up with an exercise wall chart so they can record any exercise they do. Fitness test results have been recorded on a card so they can be retested in 4-6 weeks. Pedometers have also been distributed during these times to those who enrol onto Learning Well. The fitness tests generate interest & curiosity as well as engaging workers.

Each person signed up to Learning Well becomes a member of the Active Learning Company Club. The club incentive scheme allows members to earn points by completing modules & healthy living activities (participating in the pedometer challenge) and, of course, these points lead to prizes, such as gift vouchers for sports clothing/equipment.

We are also starting to work with the on site canteen to promote healthy eating (provision of fruit, water and healthy snacks).
